SERGIO CANEVARI (DATES UNKNOWN) LA PACE RUSSA [THE RUSSIAN PEACE.] 1918.
63 1/2x76 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x194 1/4 cm. Officine Dell' Istituto Italiano D'Arti Grafiche, Bergamo.
Condition B+: minor restoration and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds and in margins. Four sheets.
One of a pair of powerful, enigmatic political images from Italy during the First World War. In March, 1918, the Russians signed a peace treaty with the Germans, effectively removing themselves from the First World War. A move which allowed the Germans to concentrate more of their troops on the Western front. This image exists as a post card (from which we can ascertain its date), but as a poster it is extremely rare. We are only able to locate one other copy; in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
